New Art South Florida: The 2004 South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship
for Visual and Media Artists
September 10 – October 31, 2004
Upper Level Gallery.
MAM is proud to be this year’s host of New Art South
Florida 2004: The South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship
for Visual and Media Artists. As one of the leading programs
supporting artists in our community, the Consortium has made
a significant contribution to the steady growth of South Florida’s
cultural community.
Every year, more than 350 artists from the counties of Broward,
Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Palm Beach submit applications
to The South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowship for Visual
and Media Artists—the largest regional, government-sponsored
grant in the United States.
The award-winning artists featured in this year’s exhibition
are: Felipe Aguirre, Colby Katz, Kimberley Maxwell and W.W.
Weaver, of Broward County; Martin Oppel, Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova,
George Sanchez Calderon, Odalis Valdivieso and Clifton Childree
of Miami-Dade County; Michel Delgado and Marlene Koenig of
Monroe County; and Kevin Boldenow and Amy Broderick of Palm
Beach County.
In addition to featuring works of art by this year’s
Fellowship recipients, MAM’s presentation of New
Art South Florida reflects on the Consortium’s impact and
history. MAM has developed a special section of the exhibition
in collaboration with the Miami-Dade Public Library
System’s
Vasari Project that provides an overview of the program since
its inception. A second space in the exhibition—Artist
Access—offers information on regional, national and international
grants, residencies and fellowship opportunities as a service
to artists living and working in our own communities.
The exhibition is organized by Miami Art Museum
and curated by MAM Curator Lorie Mertes. It is supported by
MAM’s Annual Exhibition Fund and The South Florida Cultural
Consortium. The South Florida Cultural Consortium is funded
in part with the support of the National Endowment for the
Arts, the Florida Department of State Division of Cultural
Affairs and the Florida Arts Council, the Montgomery Family
Trust, Montgomery & Larson LLP, the Boards of County Commissioners
of Broward, Miami-Dade, Martin, and Monroe Counties, and the
Palm Beach County Cultural Council. |
