Overview of MAM's exhibition program
Looking at
international art from the perspective of the Americas, MAM’s
exhibition program brings together different cultural traditions
as a reflection
of the South Florida community and Miami’s unique location
at the gateway of the Americas.
For every exhibition, MAM offers a range of educational activities
and programs to engage audiences of all ages, including Visitors
Galleries, spaces where museum goers can experience and reflect on
the exhibitions through reading, writing, and hands-on activities.
MAM also publishes Gallery Notes, free four-color brochures featuring
essays by MAM curators.
MAM’s
exhibition program is the primary vehicle through which MAM expresses
its curatorial viewpoint and furthers Miami's growing national
reputation as an innovative center for the arts. Since its inception
in 1996, MAM has presented more than seventy exhibitions.
Half of these were organized by MAM’s curatorial staff, making
this program one of the most ambitious in the
United States.
MAM's exhibitions
are presented in three gallery spaces in
three distinct series. MAM’s 10,000-square-foot
Upper Level Gallery is the largest single exhibition space in
South Florida, allowing MAM to generate and present large-scale
exhibitions
that otherwise would not be seen in the region. The 3,500 square-foot
Plaza Level Gallery features MAM’s permanent holdings presented
in thematic exhibitions that offer new ways of seeing and thinking
about art and showcase Miami-based artists in an international
context. MAM’s
1,500-square-foot New Work Gallery series
presents never-before-exhibited or newly commissioned work by
leading
contemporary artists.
MAM’s Upper Level and Plaza Level exhibitions are
supported by Miami Art Museum's Annual Exhibition Fund.
