"Prisoners of the Sun: A conversation with Artist Hew Locke and Kobena Mercer"

Join the Docents

Mark OrenMeet Mark Oren, MAM docent since 2003
Mark, past president of the docent association, has been a MAM docent for ten years, marrying his twin loves of teaching and art. Mark started teaching in college, through his medical practice, and ended up as a clinical professor of medicine. He joined the docents when he stopped teaching. He recalls one of his favorite memories was his first tour to high school students. Mark recalls: “The show was on geometric abstraction, and I was very fearful that the kids would roll their eyes and be bored.  I brought early pictures by Picasso to show that he could do very wonderful and realistic work, and was bombarded from the beginning to end by excellent questions and real expressions of interest in the work and in my comments. At the end of the hour I was humbled and thrilled when 2 students asked for my autograph!”

Meet Fran Aronovitz, MAM Docent since 2005
Fran AronovitzFran, immediate past president of the docent association, has been a MAM docent for eight years. She was neither an artist nor an art major, but as a new retiree, Fran wanted to see what “docenting” was all about. Since joining, she has learned how to present art to the public through the training program for new docents and continues to learn about each exhibition through docent meetings with the museum staff.

Fran remarks: “Being able to share my new found appreciation of modern and contemporary art with visitors to the museum can be lots of fun. I have met some wonderful people who work at the museum, serve as docents, and visit the exhibitions. What a fulfilling way to spend some volunteer time!”
