New Work Miami 2013 artist Tom Scicluna’s Public Sculpture (2012) follows from a proposal by the artist to remove the bicycle racks located in front of the library and re-situate them inside MAM’s lobby, where they would continue to be used by visitors to the Cultural Plaza. This simple gesture gives rise to a multi-layered situation, involving both benevolent and antagonistic aspects. Its main effect is to force a degree of interaction between the museum’s regular patrons and staff and all sorts of individuals, most of whom had no intention of setting foot inside the museum space.
